Now all I need is rain...

I was expecting something rather flimsy because it looks so cute folded up, but opening it was a nice surprise. It feels solid and the canopy is a proper useful size, not a tiny bit of cover. Much nicer than the little manual umbrellas I've picked up before. Now all I need is rain...we're in a dry spell, so the sprinkler might have to do for a trial

Another press gathers the canopy

Most umbrellas I've used for decent coverage have been the long type that are awkward to put anywhere. With a telescoping shaft this one packs down to roughly 40cm, so it is a more sensible shape to carry. The coverage is good for one person, although I wouldn't confuse it with an enormous golf umbrella. In rain coming at an angle I still have to pay attention to how I'm holding it -- no umbrella will stop the water coming in sideways. The frame feels substantial, with plenty of flexible ribs, but it is not the lightest little thing in a bag. The oval handle is comfortable enough, just different from the straight grips I'm used to. With the spring opening I keep some room around me before pressing the button rather than letting it pop out near someone. Another press gathers the canopy; shortening the shaft is a manual job and takes a firm push. No water has come through the fabric during my use. It does what I need, I just wish it took up slightly less space when packed.

On balance, I'm very satisfied with this umbrella.

On balance, I'm very satisfied with this umbrella. It has coped with windy Chicago rain much better than the ones I've had before. My reservation is the weight. It goes into my backpack easily enough, but I certainly notice the extra load when carrying it around.

One thing worth mentioning is how the closing works.

First use of this umbrella was for shade rather than rain - and the coverage is good. Quite a spread when it's open! Looking at it folded I hadn't expected quite so much canopy. Still a handheld umbrella, not something enormous, but there's room to hold it comfortably without having my head right up against the fabric. The frame looks fairly substantial too. There are 30 flexible ribs - quite a busy arrangement underneath - and the whole thing feels more solid than the very light umbrellas I've used. Those are convenient to carry, until the weather starts pushing them around!!!! Not much wind on this first outing, so that part remains to be seen. One thing worth mentioning is how the closing works. Pressing the button brings the canopy together; shortening the telescopic section is a separate, manual job. I had to look at that before putting it away. Not difficult, just don't expect the entire umbrella to disappear into the handle at one press. The opening action is quick, and being able to bring the wet canopy together without gathering it with your other hand is useful. (Not the most exciting thing to write about - until you're actually trying to close a wet umbrella.) The oval loop handle is another little detail I appreciate. Different from the usual curved handle, but comfortable enough in my hand. With everything folded it makes a fairly tidy package, and there's a sleeve for carrying it. Getting the fabric neatly wrapped is still something you do yourself, of course. The sleeve doesn't magically tidy it up!!! Fabric seems substantial, without that very flimsy feeling. So far, a promising umbrella - will be more interesting to see what happens with regular use. Update after about a month: It's now been used for both sun and rain. The useful size wasn't just a first impression. For ordinary rain it gives good coverage, and for shade I can move it around without constantly finding one shoulder outside the canopy. It isn't the smallest or lightest thing to have in a bag, though. Compact when compared with carrying a full-length umbrella - yes. Something you completely forget you're carrying - not really. That's the compromise here. And the wind? A more qualified answer. A few gusts have pulled at it, and the frame has kept its shape. You can feel the canopy move and the ribs give a little. That is reassuring, but it doesn't mean the pull disappears from your hand. More coverage also means more fabric for the wind to catch! How much can you reasonably expect from a compact umbrella??? I still angle it towards the weather rather than leave the underside facing a gust and hope for the best. It has been sturdy in the conditions I've used it in; I haven't stood there deliberately testing how much it can take. (I'd rather keep using the umbrella than find its limit.) The button operation has remained convenient, particularly when finishing with it in the rain. I do still take a moment to fold the fabric reasonably neatly before the sleeve goes on. No great problem, just not quite the instant pack-away that the fast closing might make you imagine. Overall I'd leave it at four stars. Good shelter, a solid-feeling frame, and a useful folded size, with some weight and a little putting-away effort in exchange. Its main job is keeping the rain off me, and it has done that well - the smaller conveniences are welcome, but that is what matters most

I was after more coverage bec.

I was after more coverage bec. rain kept finding the sides of my long coat, and my laptop bag would end up wet too. This one is wider than the little umbrella I was using, and that part is an improvement. For everyday walking, though, it feels a little TOO wide for me. On crowded sidewalks I find myself watching the edge all the time, especially near trees or when someone else has an umbrella up.It folds down for carrying, which is useful, but that doesn't change the space it takes once open. The overall finish is fairly plain. Nothing particularly fancy about it, although the button is convenient and I do like having the loop to hold. I am not saying it doesn't work, because it does keep the rain off. It's just a compromise between keeping my bags covered and not feeling in the way. I will probably look for something an inch or two narrower next time.

Operation is good.

Operation is good. Size: approximately 105 cm opened, 40 cm folded, 390 grams. The button extends the pole and spreads the canopy.press again, The canopy folds but the pole does not shorten by itself. Pushing the pole in is a separate hand operation, normal for this design. Also, I keep my thumb off the control during use. Once familiar it is quite convenient. For ordinary use, what else is needed?

Alexandria Ray

The blue looks good too, simple rather than fussy.

Walking everywhere means an umbrella gets plenty of use, and I was fed up with flimsy ones that barely lasted. This feels much more dependable. It has kept the rain off on my walks and handled the wind I've encountered without a struggle. The blue looks good too, simple rather than fussy. Happy to have spent the extra for something that feels reliable.

Dennis Patel

Actually using it, I'm a bit less impressed.

Out of the package it looks fairly expensive. Actually using it, I'm a bit less impressed. It keeps the rain off, but the folded bundle is bigger than I wanted and shortening it after the canopy closes needs a firm push. I know that's the normal way it works, just isn't very convenient for me. The sleeve is decent and the handle is comfortable. It certainly looks good. I doubt I'll choose the same one again, not because it won't work, but because I'd rather have something easier to carry about.

Nancy Skinner

One even joked about stealing mine.

On these hot summers days people have said they wish they'd brought an umbrella for shade too. One even joked about stealing mine. It's a handy size, though I find wrapping it neatly afterwards a little awkward. Much nicer than having a hat sitting on your head in the heat.

Gregg Soto

Exactly the sort of umbrella I wanted!

Exactly the sort of umbrella I wanted! The green is cheerful without looking overdone, and I much prefer it to a totally plain dark one. There is enough canopy to cover me properly! My only small fuss is putting it away while everything is still wet. I leave it spread out for a little while rather than packing it up damp. Once it's dry it folds away nicely. Happy with this purchase!

Mackenzie Caldwell

Wet days aren't my favourite, this umbrella definitely is!!

Wet days aren't my favourite, this umbrella definitely is!! There's room over me and my purse without having to keep shifting everything about. It feels manageable too, so I'm not forever knocking against the people coming the other way...Somehow it makes being out in the rain a little less miserable!!

Kathryn Harmon

the frame and fabric still feel sound.

After about five months of use, including winter, I can see why people say this is sturdy; the frame and fabric still feel sound. The opening button needs a firm push, however it's a small matter once you're used to it, not something that gets in the way of using the umbrella. It takes a bit of bag room, that doesn't bother me much because it is out regularly rather than tucked away. All in all a very useful peice of kit for wet weather.

Clarence Burnett

Having shade I can take along makes a real difference.

A few weeks of using this has made being outdoors in summer much nicer for me. I'm someone who burns quickly and feels miserable with the sun directly on me, so I tend to hide indoors. Having shade I can take along makes a real difference. It feels cooler underneath and I'm happier staying outside a bit longer, rather than searching for a shady spot all the time. The frame has coped fine with breezy days so far and it looks nice as well. I've used other umbrellas for shade, but I find this one more comfortable to stand under.

Alejandra Mullen

More than I generally spend....

More than I generally spend....my little umbrellas are normally cheap ones...This one feels much more substantial and seems put together well. It springs open at a click....the canopy closes with the button too. BUT the shaft still needs pushing down by hand...that's how it resets, not something wrong with it. There is a sleeve included, which is useful for putting it away. Still a bit heavier than I'd choose for carrying all day. I'll know more after using it longer. I wanted something sturdier for wet, breezy days rather than another flimsy little thing, so hopefully the extra spend makes sense.

Bryan Cruz

I still keep a good grip on the handle.

i have had this umbrella a while and overall I am happy with it. It takes a little getting used to if you expect the button to do absolutely everything. A press sends it up quite quickly and there isn't anything else to arrange before using it. It feels fairly strong once it is open. I live near the sea so an umbrella does get pushed about here, and this one has been fine in the ordinary windy rain I have used it in. I still keep a good grip on the handle. Closing is the part you need to know about. Pressing the button gathers up the top, but then you need to push the stem back in yourself before it is ready again. That last push takes a bit more effort than I would like, not terrible but worth knowing. A friend borrowed it and thought it wasn't opening again. It just hadn't been pushed right back in after closing. Once I showed them that it was fine.Would I choose it again? Probably yes. I have gone through quite a few umbrellas and I like this one, just don't expect pressing the button to put the whole thing away for you.

Steven Dawson

Feels well made and has already handled a couple of storms for me.

Feels well made and has already handled a couple of storms for me. Opens to a useful size and folds down nicely, although it won't disappear into my smaller work bag. I see it more as something for the car or the coat cupboard than a truly tiny umbrella to carry everywhere.

Briana Rice

For shade, this has done what I wanted.

For shade, this has done what I wanted. I feel a bit cooler underneath it than I did with my old umbrella, although that could just be my impression. There is a good amount of cover and the frame feels reasonably put together. Some of the material seems quite light, so I wouldn't throw it around or shove it under heavy things in a bag. It strikes me as something to look after rather than expect to take endless rough handling. Considering what I paid, I'm happy with it, just a little cautious about how sturdy it'll prove over time.

Catherine Gomez

The black is a nice straightforward black..

OK, I was fed up of umbrellas that turned inside out or let rain through after a bit of wear. I tried this compact one and so far its stood up to being used. It isn't one of those great long umbrellas, which suits me, but opens to a decent size. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting a sturdy feeling umbrella they can actually bring with them. The black is a nice straightforward black..

Bryan Kaiser

Not the cheapest option, but I can see myself keeping this for years.

I was after something a little smarter than the usual umbrella, without sacrificing a solid feel. The finish is neat and it opens smoothly, with flexible ribs that inspire confidence. Not the cheapest option, but I can see myself keeping this for years. It looks rather elegant in use, which is a nice extra on top of keeping me dry.

Darren Daugherty

It works well in the rain.

My previous umbrella lasted years until I fell while carrying it and damaged it. I wanted something I'd like just as much, so I chose this one. It works well in the rain. The handle, though -- well -- I preferred having more to wrap my hand around. This closed oval loop feels different and takes getting used to. Not a bad umbrella at all, I just miss that old grip. I'd have paid a little extra for a fuller handle. The storage sleeve is fairly plain too; the one I had before was nicer for putting the umbrella away.

Larry Barr

Handy little umbrella to keep in the car.

Handy little umbrella to keep in the car.I was looking for something that folded down without taking over the storage space and this works well enough for that. It looks quite nice when it's open, and it did keep me dry when I needed it. I'm leaving off one star because I haven't much confidence about taking it into strong wind, not because anything has gone wrong.Living in Phoenix ... rain isn't an everyday event here, so occasional use is really what I wanted. Can't say how it would suit somewhere much wetter. Makes a nice useful gift.

Cheryl Sexton

Rain seems to bring the wind with it around here.

Rain seems to bring the wind with it around here. Drivers get strange too, like they've never seen wet roads before. I can hold this up without losing track of what's around me. The green is cheerful on a miserable day, which I appreciate more than I expected. Happy with it.

Jesus Daugherty

Boston's wind has finished off plenty of my folding umbrellas.

Boston's wind has finished off plenty of my folding umbrellas. This one has been out on several windy days and is still doing nicely. Its light, not especially heavily made, but the construction seems thought out. Around the outside it bends with a gust rather than snapping, and the inner supports though light look stronger than most compacts. I'd still be careful when the wind really funnels between downtown buildings, but with that bit of care I think this is a good one.

Bobby Guzman

Easily my favorite umbrella I've owned.

Easily my favorite umbrella I've owned. It's been getting used for nearly a year and still feels really sturdy, plus operating it couldn't be simpler. Press the button and up it goes, reliably every time I've needed it. I've used umbrellas before where one press didn't necessarily mean they'd open, which gets old fast. People have even complimented the way it looks! Living in Oregon means I get plenty of rainy days to try it out, so this hasn't just been sitting in a cupboard. I'd absolutely recommend getting one!

Debra Whitehead

A very pretty umbrella and the quality is good.

A very pretty umbrella and the quality is good. There are 30 ribs in the frame, so it feels well supported rather than flimsy. The cloth is substantial and rain has not come through it. Also useful for giving shade when the sun is out. The button responds well when opening it and I am pleased with it.

Carol Klein

An eye catching umbrella that gets noticed when I'm out and about.

An eye catching umbrella that gets noticed when I'm out and about. People have asked where I found it just walking along the street. Before going to Paris I bought a few to give out after I returned.A little heavier than I expected, but nice enough that I don't mind. Buying the gifts beforehand meant I could spend my time in museums rather than hunting through shops. Good price too, for something people can actually use.

Rick Phillips

Definitely recommend it!

Hard to imagine needing a sturdier umbrella for everyday use. It goes in my backpack and has handled windy rain well. The loop handle fits my hand nicely (I'm 5'9"). The push button opening is great, and it draws the canopy back in as well. Definitely recommend it!

Latoya Mclaughlin

Overall I'm pleased with it.

The appearance was what caught my eye first. So pretty. It packs down neatly, although it feels a little bigger folded than my previous umbrella. I'm stopping at four stars because a gust did turn it inside out, so it isn't immune to wind. The good part is it went back into shape and there was no damage afterwards. That matters more to me than expecting miracles from an umbrella. Overall I'm pleased with it.

Marvin Glover

Feels built for the long haul.

Feels built for the long haul. Solid without being a chore to carry, and the button action is the bit I keep showing people. Press once and it springs open, press again and the canopy folds in. Then just push the shaft back down by hand. Nicely put together. I wouldn't take any umbrella out expecting it to beat a gale, but for normal rain I'm impressed. The bigger risk for me is leaving it somewhere, not wearing it out. Could easily see giving one to somebody as a present.

Krista Bowers

A plain, solidly made umbrella is my preference.

A plain, solidly made umbrella is my preference. I've worn out enough flimsy ones to appreciate something that feels properly put together. The oval handle sits nicely in my hand and the frame feels substantial. At this price I'm impressed, and I'd choose the same again if this one went missing. The box was absurdly big for its contents & felt a bit wasteful, but that's separate from the umbrella itself; definitely recommend!

Stephanie Avila

Seems to be a well made umbrella.

Seems to be a well made umbrella. The pink one has been reliable. My grown daughter had one for her rainy walks, and I ended up getting one for myself too. After the canopy closes you still have to press the telescoping part down...That takes a fairly firm push. There's a carry sleeve included, which is useful for putting it away once dry.It has coped with the moderate wind we've been out in. On the whole I'm glad I bought it.

Jon Weber

It's a small detail but one I appreciate.

Somehow my husband decided the green umbrella was his as soon as it arrived. We had a little discussion about what would make an umbrella more suited to him than me, and didn't get very far with that. Anyway, these are the differences I've noticed from the compact one I normally carry:1. The handle is comfortable to grip, including when my hands are wet. It's a small detail but one I appreciate.2. Instead of a loose wrist strap there's a closed oval loop. I like having something more substantial to hold onto when carrying it folded.3. It packs down neatly. I'm not spending ages trying to get everything gathered up before it will fit back in my bag.4. The button works for opening it and for closing the canopy. You do have to push the telescoping stem back in afterwards. Getting the canopy closed quickly is handy when the wind suddenly picks up. Size wise it gets the balance right for me. Folded up it fits in my purse without making the whole bag feel weighed down. Open, there is enough coverage to keep me comfortably dry, but I don't feel like I'm taking over the sidewalk when there are people coming the other way. I've also used it in the wind that funnels between the tall buildings, which is usually where I start doubting a little umbrella, and it's coped very well. Overall I can't find anything I would want changed.

Cheryl Walker

Its good for getting out of the sun.

Its good for getting out of the sun. Feels cooler under it and gives nice shade. A little weighty and I'd prefer an open hook for carrying over my arm instead of the closed loop, but its sheltered me well from rain and breezy weather too. A good buy for anyone who spends alot of time in the sun.

Destiny Dennis

The pink is what sold me on this umbrella.

The pink is what sold me on this umbrella. I've had two others that I liked, but one got lost and the other never felt as solid as this one. This has a much more substantial feel without being awkward to carry. The color is also nicer in person, not as harsh as my previous pink one. The oval handle is comfortable in my hand too. I'd happily recommend it!

Clifford Jones

the shaft then needs pushing down by hand.

Only had a quick try in light rain so far, and the button sends the canopy up and brings it back in nicely; the shaft then needs pushing down by hand. It feels solid with the 30 ribs supporting the fabric, though I can't say much about wind yet but... the loop handle could be a little longer for my hand, that's about the only thing I'd change.

April Barber

Love the gray (or grey, as I usually write it).

Love the gray (or grey, as I usually write it). A nice sight on an otherwise miserable rainy day. It's coped well with a few wet, windy outings too. Coverage is a bit limited though, so this isn't for someone bringing half their life along...think big backpacks or enormous totes!

Katrina Cisneros

What a lovely umbrella!

What a lovely umbrella! I keep getting compliments when I take it out. People have even asked whether it's just a sunshade, but it definitely works for rain as well. Mine has done nicely on breezy days too. I can't say how it will look after years of use, so that's my one unanswered question. For now it feels substantial and looks really elegant without being fussy. Beautiful, practical, and something I'm genuinely happy to carry. A favourite purchase!

Alexa Carney

Thankyou for asking what I thought

cant really criticise the finish, however I found the grip a little large for my hand and wouldhave preferred it smaller, not a fault with how it is made just my own comfort, the umbrella gives a good area of shade which is what I wanted it for. I shall mainly use it against the sun rather than for rain, it is not quite as small folded as I had pictured but still practical to carry with me. Thankyou for asking what I thought

Dalton Gonzalez

It has made a very good first impression.

I was expecting quite a bit from this one--I like a folding umbrella with a button, and I wanted green rather than the usual dark umbrellas everywhere. It has made a very good first impression. Opened up, there's a decent amount of room under it, which is what I wanted after using ones that barely covered my shoulders. Folded away, it still makes sense to carry along instead of being a nuisance. Haven't had the first proper rain of the season yet, but for once I'm almost hoping for it so I can take this out.

Zoe Shields

This was a Christmas present and I've been using it for about four…

This was a Christmas present and I've been using it for about four months. There is a lot to like about it, particularly how much cover you get from something that can go in a bag. My disappointment is that I don't find it as easy to handle in wind as I had hoped. Walking to work in the Midwest, I notice quite a pull on my hand when I round a corner and catch a gust. It hasn't stopped me using it & it does a good job keeping me dry, but I have to pay more attention to holding it than I'd like. I still like the compact design, just think a different handle shape might suit me better for my regular walk.

Jonathan Chase

A handy little umbrella for travelling.

A handy little umbrella for travelling. I chose black for my tropical trip last year and used it both for shade in Nicaragua and for rain in Honolulu. After leaving it open to dry overnight, I gathered the fabric back up and put it in my tote. Easy to take along! Enough coverage for just me!

Marvin Cowan

The design is what sold me!

The design is what sold me! Looks smart and gives enough coverage for me and my bag in normal rain. My only grumble is folding it neatly afterwards. It needs a little patience to get the fabric lying flat, rather than just bundling everything up and putting it away...

Julia Webster

Rain is what gives most trouble where I live.

I do my walking every day whatever weather comes. Rain is what gives most trouble where I live. One hand is always occupied with umbrella when it rains, so I like this one opening by button, very simple. It has been manageable with a bit of wind along with the rain too. Looked at several before choosing,I feel this was money well spent. Can recommend it.

Jon Miller

Good umbrella, just be ready to hang on.

This has a useful amount of coverage and is still in regular use, which is more than I can say for a few umbrellas I've owned. Around town, the wind seems to save itself for the gaps between buildings. A perfectly ordinary wet walk can get quite lively there.I've been pleased with how this one copes, but there is a trade off: when a gust gets under that canopy, you feel it in your hand. I'm a big fellow and it still makes me tighten my grip. Someone smaller might find that less entertaining. I wouldn't treat it as something to hold with two distracted fingers... Good umbrella, just be ready to hang on.

Karina White

Handy for rain as well as shade.

Nice to use and not a burden to carry. Opens without a fuss, folds to a manageable size, and there is a good amount of canopy once it's up. Handy for rain as well as shade. The materials feel sturdy. Black is quite plain, but that suits me fine.I like the simple shape and I'm satisfied with it.

Clarence Glover

So far the frame has coped with the breezy rain I've used it in.

I've used umbrellas that flip at the first gust, and others that leave my shoulders wet even when I'm holding them properly. This one has been a welcome change. The coverage is generous for a folding umbrella, enough for me to feel properly sheltered rather than tucked under a little cap. You could share if you were prepared to stand close, but I mainly appreciate having the space to myself! So far the frame has coped with the breezy rain I've used it in. It has a bit more weight than a very small umbrella, which is worth remembering if holding things for a long time is tiring for you.

Frank Stafford

He does the button and I do the final push down.

My three year old has decided umbrellas are fascinating, so this was a little surprise for him. He wants it with him for preschool even on dry mornings (apparently rain is always possible). He does the button and I do the final push down. Definitely a household favourite ;-)

The Whole Umbrella Feels Properly Made, Not Flimsy At All.

First Thing To Mention ** No Strange Odour At The Handle On Mine & The Button Is Simple To Use !! Very Simple !! The Whole Umbrella Feels Properly Made, Not Flimsy At All. I'm Delighted With It & I Intend To LOOK After This One. Press For Opening, Press Again To Gather The Canopy, Then Push The Stem Down To Put It Away. I Expect To Get Plenty Of Use Out Of It, Provided I Don't Abandon It Somewhere As I Managed To Do With My Previous Umbrella.

Nathan Walters

Overall its been a good buy - would happily get another.

After going through quite a few umbrellas, this is the one I'd choose again. It felt well made straight out of the box, not that loose feeling some have. I am in and out of the car and shops all day, and pressing a button to open it or collapse the canopy makes things much easier. It stays firm in use and hasn't turned over on me in the wind. Overall its been a good buy - would happily get another.

Really sweet!!

Really sweet!! My older son loved having an umbrella when he was three, so I got one for my youngest too. He is delighted with it!! A word of advise, remember to bring it in from the patio. I left my older son's out for days once and the colour faded in places, so I'm being more careful with this one.
