Had umbrellas before that made the same walk a battle.
Kept meaning to leave a review, now I've got a tablet and finally remembered.Gets me across the big car park at work where wind seems to funnel straight between the buildings. I've carried it through plenty of wet, blustery days and it's stayed easy to manage. Had umbrellas before that made the same walk a battle. This one has been my favourite by far, I just keep going with a smile under my trusty brelly!

Update ...
Our daughter earned this for reaching a big goal, and she was nine at the time. She was so pleased with it and has worked it into all sorts of dress up outfits. Mostly she wanted something for the rain we don't get often, but she wanted it to look nice too. A month in, it had already seen plenty of playing and was holding up well.Update ... More then six months on it's still getting used, now by all three girls, and is in good shape.

I expect to get a good many years out of this purchase.
The Haven compact umbrella feels solidly built and has a smart, plain gray finish. I checked the dimensions before buying: roughly 105cm across when open and 40cm once folded. Well, compact here doesn't mean a tiny pocket umbrella, which suits me fine. The opening action is positive and the frame looks substantial. I expect to get a good many years out of this purchase.

Very happy with them for that.
We take these on the walk back from school each afternoon. There's no bus for our neighborhood and I don't fancy sitting in the pickup line for 45 minutes. They give us some shade on the way home, which makes that walk much nicer. My 6yr old LOVES carrying her own umbrella and thinks she looks terribly fancy. We're having such a dry spell that we've only used them for sun so far, not rain. Very happy with them for that.

Coverage is about right for me.
Coverage is about right for me. Not too cumbersome. I haven't taken it out in particularly rough weather, so the wind side is still untested. Construction seems good for the money. The simple design is sensible enough for work as well as around the course, which makes it more useful to me.

Looks good, though not quite the same as my old lost umbrella.
Looks good, though not quite the same as my old lost umbrella. The folded size suits me and it gives a nice amount of cover when open. My only reservation is the effort needed to press the telescoping section down after the button has folded the canopy. It closes as intended, just firmer than I'd prefer. Hoping that part feels easier with use, because otherwise I'm happy with it.

Need an umbrella for travelling?
Need an umbrella for travelling?Something for a roomy purse?Or a briefcase or messenger bag rather than carrying a long umbrella around? This packs down nicely!I've had no worries with it so far, including some proper wet weather. Feels dependable, and it's an easy one to take along.
Lynn Gordon
The handle was the surprise for me.
This is considerably more substantial than the umbrellas I've owned before. The handle was the surprise for me. Its closed oval shape gives my hand something comfortable to hold rather than just clenching a narrow straight grip, which makes quite a difference on a longer walk. We get windy days here in Seattle and it has coped well on the ones I've used it. Two of us can tuck underneath if we stay close together. I liked it when I ordered, but I'm even happier now I've actually carried it.
Jackie Nichols
What surprised me was the handle (the shape of it, really).
The fabric feels substantial and the frame looks sound. I expect it to do well, although I've only had it out once. What surprised me was the handle (the shape of it, really). The oval loop is practical, but the look is a bit plain and utilitarian. I'd have liked a grip with a softer, more traditional appearance. Also the tip isn't something I'd want to rest on rough ground. Still, it folds into a tidy black bundle. Reasonable for the money, I suppose.
Carlos Stanton
Nice umbrella, but it doesn't fit the purse I normally take out.
Nice umbrella, but it doesn't fit the purse I normally take out. Folded it's about 40cm long, which I really should have checked before buying. With a larger purse it would be fine, and I like the button action and the coverage when it's open. I'll keep it for my bigger bag rather than try to squeeze it into the small one.
Tom Yoder
Am VERY happy with how they're made.
Read a few doubtful comments before ordering; still, the price persuaded me to get four.Am VERY happy with how they're made. Light enough for carrying around, which suits us in Louisiana where our usual showers aren't that windy.I wouldn't choose them expecting storm gear, but for the weather we get they're excellent!

Good to use, good to carry, and an easy recommendation from me.
Umbrellas get judged fairly harshly in this Oregon household. I'm fussy about them, and this one has done a fine job in our usual wet weather. I tend to pick things with dogs on them because I'm a dog person, but I like the simple look here anyway. Good to use, good to carry, and an easy recommendation from me.

blue on top looks good in daylight.
Open width is roughly 105cm, folded length about 40cm. Weight is around 390g, so compact doesn't mean one of those tiny things you forget is in your bag. The 30 flexible ribs give the canopy a supported shape without looking particularly bulky from underneath. Black underside; blue on top looks good in daylight. The handle is an oval loop, closed rather than an open hook. Comfortable enough in my hand, though it takes up space at the end of the folded umbrella.Button opens it promptly. Press again to gather the canopy, then compress the telescoping section manually. Worth understanding that distinction before expecting the whole thing to retract itself. Separate sleeve goes over it once you've got the folds tidied up. I find that part more fiddly than opening it, as usual.Seems perfectly adequate for ordinary rain. I wouldn't treat the number of ribs as an invitation to take it out in any possible weather. Good useful cover for one person, not some enormous golf-sized shelter. Four stars because I'd prefer a shorter folded package for everyday carrying.

A nice looking umbrella that makes rainy days a little less miserable.
A nice looking umbrella that makes rainy days a little less miserable. Its roomy for me, or me and a child, without feeling like I'm taking over the pavement. The sides don't seem to get in everybody's way. Folds into a manageable bundle and goes in my bigger purse or tote quite easily.
Miranda Guerrero
Over all it seems a good umbrella and I would recommend it.
Some of my online umbrella buys haven't been much good, so this was a nice surprise. The loop handle feels comfortable in my hand and it opens promptly with a press of the button. It has a solid feel without being awkward to carry. For what I paid it seems very good value, no regrets there. Over all it seems a good umbrella and I would recommend it.

Is an umbrella meant to make the clouds disappear?
Is an umbrella meant to make the clouds disappear? Not in my experience. The rain carries right on, only now it lands on the canopy instead of my head. That is an arrangement I can live with. The automatic opening is handy as well, and the cream white is easy for me to spot among all the dark umbrellas.
Jane Wilkins
The handle is what makes this umbrella especially comfortable for me
The handle is what makes this umbrella especially comfortable for me; the oval loop gives my hand a decent place to settle. The button opens or gathers the canopy, and the supplied sleeve keeps it tidy once dry. A sensible size for carrying about. I've had several over time with no quality complaints. Generally I manage to leave one somewhere before I get anywhere close to wearing it out.
Eileen Curtis
Button opening is handy too.
The three grandkids, all under four, are thrilled with their umbrellas. They want to be outside whenever there is rain and had a lovely time yesterday. This green one has been a favourite with the granddaughter who likes to parade about with it, with me helping hold it. Big enough for me to use properly too, which is useful rather than a tiny childrens one. Button opening is handy too.Update: Nineteen months on it still looks good and comes out for nearly every wet day.

I've bought this style before and it's the sort I always return to.
I've bought this style before and it's the sort I always return to. Rain sheds off nicely, and pressing the button folds the canopy before I bring it into the car, which saves a lot of drips on the seat! You still push the shaft down yourself afterwards, but that is just packing it away. I've tried a few different umbrellas and kept wishing for one like my old favorite. This feels right in my hand again. So glad I found it!!

A solid umbrella at a fair price.
A solid umbrella at a fair price. Much nicer than the old one I was carrying. It slips into my backpack & having a button to open AND shut the canopy is excellent. The green is rich rather than washed out, and the frame looks substantial. Buying it was straightforward too!
Douglas Craig
Nice size for keeping in my backpack.
Nice size for keeping in my backpack. It's there for surprise rain, and I wasn't expecting anything especially solid from a folding umbrella. Opened it and was pleasantly surprised, it seems much sturdier than I had in mind. Not planning to chase a storm with it though. Kidding!
Isabella Elliott
Good coverage when the rain starts, and I am staying dry!
Takes a windy day well. It hasn't flipped over when I've been caught out, and the construction feels solid.I like the gray shade too. The overall appearance is tidy and professional, without looking fussy.Good coverage when the rain starts, and I am staying dry!

It turns out I hang onto umbrellas pretty well.
It turns out I hang onto umbrellas pretty well. The few I've misplaced have been the plain, cheap ones that look like everybody else's. My old pink umbrella has been around for something like ten years, and although I still have it, it's looking rather tired. That was my excuse to get some replacements. After going through quite a few reviews I chose this one, and I'm pleased with it! It feels nicely put together, folds to a manageable size and gives me enough coverage once opened. The button operates the canopy smoothly in both directions-the last part of packing it away isn't quite so effortless. You have to push the shaft back down by hand, and that takes a bit of effort before wrapping it and sliding it into the sleeve. Apart from that, I feel I've bought something decent. I'm usually reluctant to spend extra on an umbrella, but this seems worth it if you actually keep yours. If yours always disappear, maybe not. The pink is attractive and easier to pick out among everyone else's umbrellas.

Could you consider cardboard tubes for an item like this?
No time to search the department stores for a tough umbrella, which is how I ended up ordering this. Really happy with the umbrella itself, but the big box and all the air pillows used for packing filled my trashcan. Could you consider cardboard tubes for an item like this? It seems such a waste to have one umbrella sitting in that much empty box.
Savannah Hancock
For everyday rain it has been good.
The new golf bag I purchased has an umbrella tube, so after a couple of wet outings I decided to get something to put in it. So the good: This gives a decent amount of cover without being huge to carry around. It covers my shoulders well and I don't feel like I have to keep moving it about to stay dry. There are a lot of ribs under there, with a bit of give to them rather than feeling rigid. For everyday rain it has been good. The bad; Folded up it is still quite bulky for the tube on my bag. I expected a compact umbrella would slide in there but this one doesn't, so it has to go elsewhere. Could be the opening on the bag is just too narrow. Either way that was part of the reason for buying it, hence the missing star. The other thing is putting it away. Pressing the button to open it is simple, and another press brings the canopy down. That does not make the whole thing short again though. You have to press the telescoping section back down yourself, then arrange the fabric to get it neatly into the sleeve. All works, just a little more fiddling than I expected. I am happy with it in use, less happy with where I have to carry it.
Wyatt Washington
The one thing worth mentioning is putting it away.
Having bought six umbrellas online, I've got a fairly good idea now of what I actually want to carry. The really heavy ones may feel stronger, but they're no good to me left at home. This is a sensible middle ground. It goes in my laptop bag and gives a generous amount of cover once opened, without feeling like a great weight in my hand. I've been happy with it in rain and the frame feels secure when there's some wind. Looks smart as well. The one thing worth mentioning is putting it away. Pressing the button shuts the canopy, but the telescoping stem still needs to be pushed down, and that takes a fairly firm push to latch. Nothing wrong with it, just more resistance than I was expecting.. I also own a full length umbrella which is nice enough, but I have to carry that in my hand all the time. This one is much more practical when I've already got a bag with me.
Dennis Stein
The button works as it should for opening and closing the canopy.
It's fine to use, although I hadn't imagined it opening out so wide. I had visions of sailing off down the street in a gust. A smaller one might suit me better, but I've never taken a tape measure to an umbrella. The button works as it should for opening and closing the canopy.
Sergio Blair
less messing about with a wet umbrella.
I haven't had a chance to use this umbrella in really heavy rain yet, but my first impressions are good. Having a button to open and close the canopy was a big reason I picked it. It feels sturdy and has worked nicely so far. Going from the rain into a building, or getting into a taxi, is much easier... less messing about with a wet umbrella. Pushing the shaft down afterwards is a different matter though. That part is manual and feels rather stiff to me, needing a firm push. It has to go all the way down until it catches, which can be awkward when there isn't much space. Packed away, the size is lovely and fits into my handbags easily. I like the sleeve as well... nice to have it tucked away neatly. Besides the effort of pushing it down, I thought there would be slightly more canopy when it opened. It covers me and what I'm carrying sufficiently, but somehow still seems a little small. Maybe that's just because I'm used to my previous umbrella. Those are the two things I'd change, otherwise I'm very happy with it.

1) Coverage is good for a folding umbrella
The price gave me pause, yes. I originally wanted an umbrella for a trip to Costa Rica, and this has stayed in my pack or laptop bag rather than being put away afterwards. 1) Coverage is good for a folding umbrella; I don't feel as though I'm hiding under a tiny lid. 2) It isn't weightless, but carrying it around is no hardship and it feels substantial once open. 3) The construction is reassuring: lots of flexible ribs, neat fabric, and nothing that feels flimsy when I handle it. The beige is fairly understated, which suits me. One thing worth understanding is the closing action. A press of the button brings the canopy in, then you push the telescoping shaft down yourself. That last bit is manual, not another button press. With that understood it's straightforward, and I think it's a very worthwhile piece of everyday kit.
Robert Montgomery
The gray is understated and suits me.
I've found this very good in the sort of wind that makes carrying an umbrella annoying. It has been manageable on walks when other people were having rather more trouble. The gray is understated and suits me.The opening button is still working smoothly after about seven months, and the canopy gives decent coverage for something I can fold away. My reservation is with packing it back into the sleeve. Unless I spend a moment getting the folds neat, it's a fairly tight fit and I end up fiddling with it. I don't use it constantly, so perhaps I'm just not particularly practiced at that part.So I like it very much once it's open, but the putting-away stage isn't quite as convenient as I would like.

No eyes got poked and no fingers caught...
We gave this umbrella to our granddaughter, who's 3 1/2, and it was a hit. On our Christmas visit she kept it close at mealtimes, bedtime and outdoors, raining or not. No eyes got poked and no fingers caught...she could work it easily. Can't think of anything we could have bought that she'd have enjoyed more.
Randy Roth
A very nice umbrella!
I've wanted an umbrella that I could tuck away between showers, especially for keeping my hair presentable. It's only had one outing so far, but having it open with a button was lovely when the rain started. There was enough cover without feeling as though I was taking up the whole pavement. Folded, it still wants a fairly roomy bag rather than my smallest purse. Glad I've added this one to the collection. A very nice umbrella!
Heidi Sexton
Time will tell how it lasts, but so far I'm impressed.
10/10 Honestly surprised by how much cover there is once it opens! Two of us can get under it if we stay close, which I wasn't expecting from a folding umbrella. Time will tell how it lasts, but so far I'm impressed. Closing takes a button press to gather the canopy, then a firm push by hand to shorten the shaft. That seems fair enough to me, money well spent.
Kathy Hull
What a great umbrella.
What a great umbrella. Feels really sturdy and has kept me dry in some very heavy rain. For what it cost, I'm impressed. It's wide enough that you do need to watch where you're going on the sidewalk, don't be the person poking everyone else. Still, arriving dry is worth a bit of care!
Erica Jefferson
Quite handy to carry.
Quite handy to carry. There is a surprisingly busy looking frame underneath, with 30 ribs. The cover itself isn't as wide as some I've used. I'd be a little cautious about using it in very windy weather. Probably a reasonable trade off for having something that folds down.
Beverly Clayton
There are some nice everyday details, too.
Living in Seattle means getting rained on for a fair amount of the year. Around here, carrying an umbrella is practically admitting you're from somewhere else--locals tend to take a little pride in going without one. Unfortunately for my local credentials, my walk to work is a mile each way and I read as I go. Keeping the pages dry wins out over looking like I belong.
I've been using the really small folding umbrellas and getting through several over a year. Handy little things until a gust catches them, and then there isn't much to them. The first thing I noticed about the Haven was how much more substantial the whole frame felt. It seems quite sturdy without being a chore to hold. In the breezy rain I've had it out in, it has stayed steady and done a better job of sheltering my book. There's some give to the ribs, which seems to help it cope rather than getting pushed out of shape.
There are some nice everyday details, too. A press of the button opens it, and the button folds the canopy back in when I'm done. You push the shaft down yourself, then wrap it into a fairly neat bundle. Open, the size suits me. More coverage than those little pocket umbrellas, but not a huge thing I'm trying to steer along the pavement. Holding it in one hand leaves the other free for my book.
My one reservation is the length once it's packed away. At around 40cm folded, it takes up noticeably more room than my old little ones. Putting it in my backpack isn't the casual drop-it-in affair it used to be. Still, I suppose the extra folded length is a trade for getting a more solid umbrella. I'm happy with it overall.
Beth Hines
I hate slathering on sunscreen & living somewhere sunny and windy…
I hate slathering on sunscreen & living somewhere sunny and windy means I wanted an umbrella that felt up to regular use. I wasn't keen on paying this much at first, but it has been worth it.The shade is comfortable and the frame feels much more substantial than the cheap ones I've had. It doesn't make the heat disappear, but it's a lot nicer than being directly in the sun.If you want an umbrella for everyday shade, I think the quality justifies spending a bit extra.
Devon Patel
Otherwise a perfectly good umbrella.
Feels fairly light and nicely made...the button opens it and brings the canopy down, then the shaft needs a manual push. Getting it back into the sleeve is a bit of a fiddle unless it's folded neatly, so one star off for that. Otherwise a perfectly good umbrella.
Oscar Mercer
The umbrella itself seems solid and is what I expected.
Thank you, it came quickly. The umbrella itself seems solid and is what I expected. The beige fabric had creases from being packed, which gave me a slightly odd first impression, although the rest was clearly new. Once opened out it looked much better. I am happy with it, just think a neater fold would make a better first impression.
Geoffrey Collier
I'm really pleased with this umbrella!
I'm really pleased with this umbrella! It feels a little delicate, which didn't surprise me. Getting it here was a frustrating business, but the people helping were lovely. They kept replying and making sure I knew what was happening. After the first parcel went missing, a replacement finally arrived. Worth the bother.
Angelica Sampson
I actually enjoy having it along.
It's a handy size, and I don't feel as though I'm taking over the pavement when I use it. Enough shelter for me, though. The wind around downtown Boston has made me regret plenty of umbrellas, but this one has been very agreeable so far.I actually enjoy having it along.Only downside was entirely mine - I left it up on the luggage shelf on the commuter train and walked away without it. Had to get another, which says something about how much I liked it. The price made that a little easier to swallow. We've had such a wet spring and summer around here, and having a decent umbrella has made the commute much less miserable.
Jerome Craig
The handle is perfectly usable
I've been using this umbrella through enough changes in the weather to have a fairly good idea of how it behaves. It has been out in spring showers, heavier summer rain, breezy autumn afternoons and the sort of cold rain that is almost sleet. The fabric still looks very good, the ribs are all sitting where they should, and the button operates just as readily now as it did at the beginning. Between buildings, where the breeze seems to come from several directions, it has felt reassuringly steady in my hand. I like the size, too -- enough canopy for me without feeling that I am taking over the pavement whenever somebody needs to pass. Once folded, it is much less of a nuisance to carry. The gray is understated, but I've actually had a few nice comments about it. Nothing especially showy, just a neat-looking umbrella.
There are two small things I would alter, though neither has put me off using it. First, being short, I sometimes find it more comfortable to hold a little higher on the shaft instead of down at the oval loop handle. The handle is perfectly usable; it just isn't always where my hand naturally wants to be (apparently taller people get first consideration in umbrella design). Second, the button is very easy to reach, which is useful until I catch it while shifting my grip. I have shut the canopy before I intended to while preparing to put the umbrella away, leaving me to juggle the wet fabric a bit. After closing the canopy with the button, you push the telescoping shaft in yourself. There is nothing difficult about that, but I get on better if I finish that part before bothering with the tie. Trying to do everything together is where I become all thumbs. That may say more about me than about the button placement, to be fair.
Neither point has stopped this becoming my favorite umbrella. It provides good cover, still feels sound after regular use, and is a sensible size for walking among other people. Those are the things I notice every time it rains, rather than the little changes I might make if I were designing it myself.
Cameron Pollard
A very good umbrella.
Much easier to manage than the old fashioned umbrellas I used to carry: the button opening is handy and there's a decent amount of cover. Pushing the shaft back in by hand takes a little effort, but it's straightforward once you get the knack. A very good umbrella.
Michael Cortez
Otherwise, a lovely umbrella that feels well made.
Nearly there.I wish it shortened itself as well when the button folds the canopy. It needs a manual push to reset the telescoping section before it will open again. That's how it's meant to work, just not my favourite step. Otherwise, a lovely umbrella that feels well made.
Adriana Sims
Rain doesn't seem quite so miserable with this cheerful pink umbrella!
Rain doesn't seem quite so miserable with this cheerful pink umbrella! The colour looks great against the black underneath. Feels sturdy and I've had no trouble with it so far. Being able to open it and collapse the canopy with the button is something I really like. I'd definitely be happy to choose this one again!
Emily Gonzales
I wouldn't choose on coverage alone.
There's a useful amount of room under this umbrella once it's up, considering how short it is folded. I've owned larger ones that were fine until a gust got underneath them, then they became more trouble than shelter. The ribs on this one have some flexibility, which seems a sensible approach. I wouldn't assume that makes any umbrella immune to wind, though.
The button is handy. One press and it's ready overhead. Nice little convenience when you're trying to get outside in the wet. Closing is straightforward too: the button shuts the canopy, and I push the shaft back down myself.
Getting the folds neat enough for the sleeve took me a couple of goes. Apparently putting an umbrella away can still defeat me for a minute. Once it's tidied up, it makes a reasonably compact bundle.
It also isn't as weighty in use as I expected from looking at all those ribs. No scales involved here, just how it feels while I'm standing holding it. The closed loop gives me a comfortable grip.
Overall the construction seems solid, with none of that flimsy feeling I've had from umbrellas before. My first impression is that this should last better.
______________
UPDATE:
I've now used it during a storm rather than just opening it and admiring it. The cover was useful when the rain started coming in at an angle, and the gusts gave it a decent tug. I had to pay attention to which way I was holding it. It stayed usable, and I came away more impressed than I was after the initial inspection.
One thing worth remembering is that a compact folded umbrella still catches wind when it's open. Watching people on the train platform this morning, the really large umbrellas looked like quite a handful, particularly for the smaller people carrying them. I wouldn't choose on coverage alone. For me this is a good balance: enough shelter to be useful, but not the enormous canopy I used to think I needed.
Julie Long
One small gripe.
There is some thought behind the construction: thirty flexible ribs support the canopy, and the frame looks neatly put together. It is not a cheap umbrella, but if the joints hold up over time I will consider it money well spent. Coverage is adequate for me, although I wouldn't buy a compact umbrella expecting a great deal of space for a second person. One small gripe. Getting the fabric tucked into an entirely tidy bundle takes more care than pressing the button to close the canopy. The shaft then needs pushing back in by hand. Also worth noting that the handle is a closed oval loop, not a conventional hook. At about 40cm folded, it is portable rather than miniature. Those distinctions matter if you are choosing it for a particular bag. Overall I like the design and am satisfied with the purchase.
Heidi Bailey
It looks quite smart too.
This was a birthday present for a friend and, honestly, he was delighted. He kept playing with the opening button and trying out the handle, then walking about with it open. It looks quite smart too. A fun but useful present, which is just what I was hoping for.
Devin Lawrence
Away from that sort of crowd, it's a very nice umbrella to have.
There's more room underneath than I expected. It will shelter two standing close together, but I would avoid a crowded pavement with it. Even ordinary umbrellas knock into each other there and this needs its own space. Away from that sort of crowd, it's a very nice umbrella to have.
Olivia Mcdaniel
A very handy umbrella.
It gives a lot of cover for something that folds down this size. Press the button and it extends with the canopy opening. Press again and the fabric folds in (you then push the telescoping sections together by hand to get it ready for next time). Simple once you've tried it. A very handy umbrella.
