Worth pointing out that this isn't one of those great big umbrellas.

I finally retired my everyday umbrella after more than eight years. It had stayed the right way out in weather that left plenty of abandoned umbrellas along the streets on my walks. Opening and folding it was getting rather creaky, though, and the handle's finish had worn away in places. Still usable, just getting old. So I went for another compact one, this Haven. Worth pointing out that this isn't one of those great big umbrellas. For one average sized person it's a very useful size. Two can get under it, provided they are prepared to be quite close - and not just on friendly terms. Mine doesn't travel in a handbag. It sits in the side bottle holder of my backpack, which means it's with me rather than at home when the rain starts. I do have a larger umbrella as well, but that won't ride in the backpack the same way. That one is saved for days when rain is a certainty and I'm expecting to share the cover. I've steered quite a few people toward a decent compact umbrella over the years, and I'd be happy recommending this one. It also cost less than the options I'd looked at locally, which makes recommending it a little easier. This is the size I keep coming back to, and I don't see that changing.

The oval handle suits my hand and gives me a secure grip.

Finally an umbrella that doesn't have me wondering when I'll need a replacement. I had got fed up with inexpensive ones that folded backwards or came apart after a little use, and wanted something that felt more substantial. This one makes a good first impression even folded, with a frame that feels firm rather than loose. The oval handle suits my hand and gives me a secure grip. I like being able to press a button to put it up, then use the same button to draw the canopy closed when I'm finished. You do have to compress the stem yourself afterwards, which is worth knowing before your first use. In the gusts I've encountered it hasn't flipped over or felt as though it was twisting around above me. You still need to keep hold of it, obviously, since an open umbrella catches the breeze. Folded up it goes into my briefcase, and I wouldn't have trouble finding room for it in a carry-on either. Not the tiniest umbrella, but exactly the solid everyday one I wanted!

Very pleased with how it performs.

I've carried this on wet days when the bins were full of umbrellas that had given up.It isn't burdensome to carry, but there's a surprising amount of support under the canopy. The 30 ribs have some flex to them, which seems preferable to a frame that's completely rigid. Mine has kept its shape through the breezes I've encountered, and no rain has seeped through the fabric. Very pleased with how it performs.

So far it has coped with that without much fuss.

After a few umbrellas that didn't last, I was more interested in something substantial than in getting the smallest one possible. I often walk with someone else, and an umbrella giving up halfway along is not much use to either of us. This one gives decent coverage for me, though you do have to stay fairly close if two people are trying to share it. It has been out in the heavy rain we've had recently and some gusty weather as well. So far it has coped with that without much fuss. The canopy feels secure when it is up, and the whole thing has a more solid feel than the lightweight ones I was replacing. The trade off is what you carry around afterwards. It folds down, but it isn't a tiny umbrella that disappears into a bag, and after carrying it for a while I do notice the weight. There is also a bit more to putting it away than pressing the button. That brings the canopy down, then the telescoping section needs to be compressed manually before it is ready to pack away. Normal enough, just not quite as effortless as I had pictured. For me the bulk and that extra closing step keep it from being perfect. Once it is up, however, it has been a dependable umbrella in unpleasant rain, which was the main reason for buying it.

I used a large golf umbrella for years.

Atlanta is home for me. It isn't the hottest place on earth, but there are plenty of days when you really want something between you and the sun.About ten years back I visited Thailand, in November of all months, and it was still in the nineties. Hot? You better believe it. I paid attention to what people there did rather than just standing around being miserable. Umbrellas for sunshine were a very ordinary sight. Most looked fairly small, with short handles, which makes sense if you're carrying one around. That stuck with me. Since that trip I have taken an umbrella along whenever I expect to spend much time out in sunshine. I used a large golf umbrella for years. This compact one is less of a production to carry, gives me useful shade, and the push button is convenient. I don't need something enormous just to shade myself. Yesterday I walked over to a neighborhood gathering at the pool with it. By the time I left, about five women had wanted to know where I'd found it and what it cost. People notice once they see somebody actually using one this way. And yes, I'm a man. Other men have occasionally given me a hard time about carrying an umbrella on a sunny day. My answer is that I'm comfortable enough being a man to choose comfort over their approval. Usually there's not much more to say after that. Anyway, give it a try. A sunny day feels a lot more inviting when you can bring your own patch of shade.

Just waiting on the rain now and I can't hardly wait.

Just waiting on the rain now and I can't hardly wait. I've owned a decent umbrella before, so I have something to judge it against. This one feels more substantial and opening it with the button is a nice step up. Not used outdoors yet, but I'm eager to put it to work.

Judith Lane

The umbrella, is a good size, not heavy and dries quickly.

The umbrella, is a good size, not heavy and dries quickly. Looks smart too, which is always a bonus. The gray is nicer in person than in the picture. There's a button to pop it open and fold the canopy, then I push the shaft in to pack it away. Very straightforward to use.

Jodi Mccall

It looks pretty and feels solid.

I like it quite a lot overall. It looks pretty and feels solid. It's a bit weightier than I pictured, though, and getting it fully packed away takes some effort. The canopy closes with the button, but shortening the telescoping section needs both hands for me. There is a sleeve for it, which is handy once it has dried off.

Amber Baldwin

Hearing good things about this umbrella was what made me give it a go.

Hearing good things about this umbrella was what made me give it a go. After using it for a year or so....I can say it was money WELL SPENT. It has managed the windy, rainy days I've taken it out in and is still going strong. No need to keep buying replacements. I honestly wouldn't mind having another one ready to use! :-)

Joyce Castro

Hard to judge umbrellas until they've had a bit of wind.

Hard to judge umbrellas until they've had a bit of wind. I've spent more on ones that went inside out, so this one coming through a windy rainstorm intact makes it fine by me. The only thing I would change is getting both of mine in Beige. They look like the picture, so no issue there, but two the same isn't much variety. It doesn't matter a great deal and I'm happy enough with them, I just would have liked one in a different colour rather than a matching pair.

Colin Wade

Sturdiness matters more to me than anything else in an umbrella.

Sturdiness matters more to me than anything else in an umbrella. The one I replaced had lasted four years and was still opening fine--it was the worn fabric that finally made me retire it. I've been using this one for over a year now, and so far it's carrying on just as well. No regrets about getting it.

Joan Wise

The build feels solid, and it has been a dependable umbrella for me.

The build feels solid, and it has been a dependable umbrella for me. I use it while golfing, and it has coped well with the breezy, rainy days I've taken it out in. Living in West Texas, I appreciate something that doesn't feel flimsy in my hand. It is a handy size for one person rather than a giant golf umbrella. For the money I think it's good value. I wanted something straightforward that would keep the rain off, not something fancy, and this has done just that.

Chelsea Klein

a nice purchase.

My daughter's interest in Japanese things was what got us looking at umbrellas in the first place. This isn't a traditional parasol, just a handy everyday umbrella, and she is delighted with it. It seems sturdy enough for normal use and gives her shade outside as well as rain cover. I'd still help small children with the button, better to be cautious...we chose cream white and it looks a little softer than the picture...a nice purchase.

Jacob Campos

It looks every bit as nice in person.

Two of these now, one stays at home and the other lives at the office. I like having the same easy action whichever one I pick up.They open with a satisfying whoosh and feel properly substantial once up. No desire to test one in some enormous gale, but the ordinary windy rain hasn't bothered mine. It looks every bit as nice in person. Why should a rainy day mean carrying something dreary?! It's a cheerful thing to have overhead, and I'm quite happy being the person who gets enthusiastic about an umbrella (there are worse things to get excited about!)

Caitlin Murray

Once I opened it, though, the frame felt surprisingly solid.

At the price I paid I wasn't expecting anything special, and thought I might send it back if it felt flimsy. Once I opened it, though, the frame felt surprisingly solid. It packs away without needing much room, yet there is plenty of cover when it's up. Far better than I had pictured and I'm delighted with it!!!

Marco Hodge

This has been a really good choice.

Since moving to the Northeast I've been walking to work and having to dress a bit more smartly. I wanted an umbrella that would protect my work clothes without being a chore to carry. This has been a really good choice. It gives me enough cover for the rainy walk and feels steady and comfortable in my hand. Another thing I appreciate is that the water shakes off quite easily. I leave it open to finish drying rather than packing it away wet, but it doesn't take ages. The beige looks smart too, and I've had a few nice comments about it. Working in the medical field, I like arriving looking presentable rather than completely soaked. It's not an enormous umbrella, which actually makes carrying it every day easier. Money well spent.

Paige Ellison

Exactly what I needed it for.

Bought it to keep both me and my backpack covered walking around university. My electronics travel in that bag, so keeping the rain off matters quite a lot. Had a chance to use it recently and it kept everything dry, including the bag. Exactly what I needed it for.

Bethany Mcintyre

The construction feels good overall and it has been dependable in…

The construction feels good overall and it has been dependable in ordinary rain. I do find I need to hold it carefully when the wind picks up, so I wouldn't choose it just for very exposed walks. My previous little umbrella lasted ten years and was easier to tuck away. This one gives decent cover though, and I'm happy with it for everyday use.

Steven Chandler

The size listed is accurate.

The size listed is accurate. Folded, it is about 40cm long, so it goes in my backpack without being a full-length umbrella. It is not, and I do mean not, something I would put in a pants pocket. I wanted a travel umbrella for the odd spring shower rather than something to carry through a serious storm. For that purpose it makes sense. The construction seems decent, but the folded bundle has some bulk to it. Check the dimensions if you need something truly tiny.

Amber Morrison

Rain and a bit of wind haven't bothered this umbrella at all.

Rain and a bit of wind haven't bothered this umbrella at all. Seriously! My favourite part is the button that shuts the canopy. Doesn't sound exciting, right? Try getting into a car in the rain. I can keep the cover over my head until I'm sitting down, press it, and bring it inside without the usual wrestling match. The stem still needs pushing in afterwards, but by then I'm under cover. BRILLIANT! My wife is getting one of her own because I'm not sharing!

Carl Morse

Both directions are much less of a juggling act now.

We needed a replacement after leaving our compact umbrella behind somewhere. This one folds fairly short, although the bundle is wider than the others we have had. It feels reassuringly solid without needing an enormous canopy to give decent coverage. The automatic opening is particularly useful from the car. I can hold the door open, press the button and have it ready before stepping out. Coming back in during heavy rain, I can collapse the canopy with the button while getting seated, then push the telescoping section in manually. Both directions are much less of a juggling act now.

Bought eight as high school graduation presents.

Bought eight as high school graduation presents. The quality I expected and a good size for college walks in heavy rain. With all the graduation open houses I'm invited to, the price was manageable. Very pleased with the umbrellas, the way they were packed and the quick delivery.

Tristan Crawford

very happy with how it looks, yay!

the blue came out just how i hoped-- such a relief! its a really lovely color, looks SO nice in person and not washed out. i got myself confused with the button at first and thought i was doing somthing wrong, but it was just me figuring it out. press to open, press again and the fabric pulls in, then the pole needs pushing down ready for next time. pretty easy once you know. this is a proper rain umbrella rather than just something pretty to hold, which is nice for florida weather. i mainly wanted it as my bit of blue for the wedding pictures in august, and it it looks like it will work beautifully for that. very happy with how it looks, yay!

Sarah Gallagher

There's enough room under this for an adult without feeling crowded.

There's enough room under this for an adult without feeling crowded. At 5'3" I find it gives my shoulders good cover, and I don't have to hold the edge right near my face. The plain black looks smart rather than fussy. It feels nicely made too, especially considering how neatly it folds down. A pleasing purchase.

Gina Wolfe

Nice umbrella...

Nice umbrella... feels well made, and the simple design looks better than I expected. My daughter changes her mind about what she likes in about five minutes, so I was glad this wasn't covered in something she'd be tired of next week. It's still pretty enough to appeal to her now without looking too young later. Can't judge long term wear yet, but hopefully she'll be using this for ages!

Preston Woods

It arrived yesterday and I had rain to try it in today.

It arrived yesterday and I had rain to try it in today. After that first outing I'm impressed!! Usually I end up with wet shoulders and damp hair, but I came back dry this time. It does feel quite flexible, so I can't say yet how it'll wear over months, but nothing gave me trouble. Opened up it's bigger than I had pictured, in a useful way rather than the sort of huge umbrella that takes up the pavement. Living in the city I don't want to be clipping everyone as I pass. This seems a good middle ground. If it keeps going like this I'll be very pleased with what I bought.

Rita Romero

Arrived pretty quickly too, always a bonus!

I've wanted a cute compact umbrella that didn't cost a fortune, and finally found one! It looks adorable. Arrived pretty quickly too, always a bonus! I've taken it out about five times and it does what I need- keeps the rain off me. Of course somebody will complain a folding umbrella isn't big enough, but what are they expecting? A roof for the entire sidewalk? Come on people. It covers me just fine, and I can actually carry it around.

Kirk Vargas

None of that changes how well it works in the rain.

Probably the best everyday umbrella I've had for the money. The oval loop handle is comfortable in my hand, although I'd welcome a little more length to hold onto. The loop shape gives a secure hold. The canopy opens out to a useful size and gives me decent coverage rather than just keeping the top of my head dry.Water beads on the fabric and most shakes off before I put it aside to dry.It can tug at your hand when the wind catches underneath, so you do have to pay attention. The button has a good positive action and opens it promptly.Pressing again brings the canopy together, then I push the stem down to reset it.The framework looks substantial without making it a nuisance to carry. My only real niggle is putting it away neatly. If I rush the folding, it is quite a squeeze getting it into the sleeve.Taking a moment to smooth the fabric makes that easier, but I don't always have the patience.I'll probably misplace the sleeve eventually anyway.None of that changes how well it works in the rain.I'd happily recommend it to somebody looking for a useful folding umbrella.

Victor Cohen

Yes, it's gray.

Yes, it's gray. Softer and more muted than it looked on my screen, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I love it. Somehow I feel very European carrying it! Nicely made and just right for a damp, hazy sort of day. I live in the desert, so those are days I actually look forward to.

Willie Lam

This is one of the nicest umbrellas I have owned.

This is one of the nicest umbrellas I have owned. I'm a wide guy so those really tiny canopies don't do much for me. This one gives me decent coverage without being awkward to carry once it is folded. I use it around Buffalo, where the weather is not always kind, and it has handled the rain and windy days I've been out in well. The button is especially handy when I've only got one hand free. A press opens it, another gathers the canopy, then I push the telescoping section down by hand before putting it away. The cream white looks elegant and the whole thing feels properly built. My previous one worked well for TWO years before I lost it in NYC. I came back for another because I had been so satisfied with how it worked!

Joan Guzman

Strong, tidy looking and good value.

Strong, tidy looking and good value. What else do I need? I use a wheelchair and this gives me useful cover while my wife pushes me. Not an enormous shared canopy, but manageable for us. After six months, including the South Florida rainy season, it still looks good and the button is working just as it should.

Janice Wolfe

A few thoughts, since I tend to fuss over umbrella dimensions.

A few thoughts, since I tend to fuss over umbrella dimensions. The design is smart and the mechanism has a smooth, positive action. I haven't taken it out in gusty weather yet (will see about that when the opportunity comes). Opened out it's roughly 105cm across, which is good for me, but not quite the generous two-person shelter I sometimes want. Folded it's about 40cm, so compact doesn't mean it disappears into any little bag. Personally I'd accept a bit more folded length if that bought a wider canopy, hey a few centimetres can matter. Still a nice umbrella and an easy one to use. That's my measuring and muttering done for now!

Hayley Harrell

Handy to leave in the car or tuck into a gym bag as well.

My son walks several blocks to school so this stays in his backpack. There's room for it with his school things and it feels properly made, not flimsy. Handy to leave in the car or tuck into a gym bag as well. For the price I'm pleased, esp with how solid it feels for something that folds down.

Tracy Phelps

What a pleasant surprise!!

What a pleasant surprise!! This feels strong in your hand and looks really smart! The button makes opening it simple, and closing the canopy is quick too. My daughter and I had to cross a parking lot in a sudden downpour, with rain blowing across us. Of course the car was parked way over the other side and I had a meeting to get to. We tucked close together and made it across with our hair still DRY!! I had been expecting to arrive looking a complete mess. That alone sold me on it. I'm absolutely delighted with this umbrella!!

Nicholas Gaines

It's useful to have along even when no rain is expected.

I spend a lot of weekend hours watching my daughter play soccer so something to sit under in the sun was the main reason for this umbrella. It gives me a decent patch of shade and is much more comfortable than sitting in direct sunlight.A few parents have asked about it at the games and I've been happy to recommend it.It's useful to have along even when no rain is expected.

Russell Ibarra

Nothing fancy just a good solid umbrella that works when I want it.

Best umbrella I've had I keep it behind the passenger seat in the car so it's there when I need it. Looks pretty bad ass back there too. Only hassle is not putting it away wet, so I let it dry before it goes back. Nothing fancy just a good solid umbrella that works when I want it.

Katie Reeves

Someone even joked about pinching mine.

Several people have commented on this when I'm out in the summer sun, saying they ought to carry an umbrella too. Someone even joked about pinching mine. It gives comfortable shade and is less stuffy than wearing a hat, although folding everything neatly afterwards is a bit of a fiddle.

Kelli Trevino

Sturdy and does what I need.

Sturdy and does what I need. It gives me shade when the sun is out and cover when it starts raining. I'm at the soccer field every week with the kids, so it comes along regularly here in Hawaii. Makes standing about much more comfortable. I hope it keeps going for a good long time.

Shaun Melendez

I have already mentioned it to several friends.

Buying an umbrella from pictures felt like a bit of a gamble, since there's no way to judge how the fabric or frame will feel in your hands. I went for the blue because it appealed to me, and the price didn't seem like too much to take a chance on. Once I unpacked it, I was pleasantly surprised. It opens out to a proper useful size, even though it folds down for carrying, and nothing about it feels flimsy. The finish looks neat and the blue is just as attractive in person. Finding something I actually needed at a price I was comfortable with was a nice change. I have already mentioned it to several friends.

Bailey Pratt

A welcome sight when this arrived.

A welcome sight when this arrived. It gives a useful amount of cover, without being one of those huge golf umbrellas. I have already carried it round in a soaking rain and stayed dry. Stayed steady in my hand too. For a golfer who still goes out on wet days this is very handy. Feels sturdy but didn't weigh as much as I thought. Thanks for a good umbrella. There will be more rainy rounds to try it on.

Dustin Cooley

For me the size works very well.

Only had one chance to use this so far and it was properly raining with some gusts. I stayed dry the whole time and it felt solid, not like I was waiting for something to snap. The handle is comfortable and opening it was no struggle at all.It didn't catch my fingers either. Press the button to bring the canopy in, then push the shaft down and it is ready to put away. For me the size works very well. Enough room overhead but not something enormous to steer along a pavement full of people. You still have to watch where other umbrellas are going of course. For moms: if you carry your baby on your front I think this would give a useful amount of cover over both of you. It also looks nicer than I expected! One outing isn't years of testing but I am delighted with how it went, and would choose this again when I need another umbrella.

Noah Evans

The umbrella itself has been great.

It's been good in the Hawaiian winter (Rain and plenty of breezy days). Much SMALLER than I had in my head, should have looked at the size more carefully. I'll probably pass this one to hubby and find a bigger umbrella for me. The umbrella itself has been great.

Christie Booker

I also appreciate the fairly simple design rather than anything fussy.

At six feet tall, with a messenger bag over one shoulder, I need more than a tiny canopy. My previous umbrella would keep my head dry while the rain got to everything lower down. This one gives me a useful amount of coverage without being a full length umbrella to carry around. I also appreciate the fairly simple design rather than anything fussy. I'm giving it four stars because the oval handle feels a little cramped in my hand. It's still perfectly usable, just not quite as roomy a grip as I would have preferred.

Ann Hodge

I like having an umbrella that isn't a bother to take along.

I like having an umbrella that isn't a bother to take along. Had a favourite about twenty-five years back and have missed having something as handy. This one gives my hair and glasses decent shelter when the rain blows a little sideways. Nothing fussy about it, and the beige is a nice finishing touch.

Jermaine Benjamin

For the money I'd also prefer something lighter in my bag.

The size suits me but (my opinion) the price is rather high for an everyday umbrella. It does auto-open and the button closes the canopy, still have to compress the shaft yourself. That's normal for this type but I expected less handling. For the money I'd also prefer something lighter in my bag.Not too excited about the value, otherwise it looks fine and it has kept the rain off

Melvin Bray

Excellent so far!

Excellent so far! It has coped with some miserable windy rain in london, the kind that has wrecked my little umbrellas before. Once open there is enough coverage that I'm not forever shifting it about to stay dry. Folded, it is chunkier and longer than the tiny pocket ones, so don't expect something that disappears into a coat pocket. For me that is a fair trade for something that feels much more solid. Looks better too, which is always a nice bonus. The only thing I'd change is the oval handle. There is room for my hand, but not much spare, and i would prefer a little more grip space. Someone with smaller hands probably wouldn't notice. It isn't stopping me using it, just something I noticed when holding it for longer. Otherwise I'm delighted with it.

Scott Cooley

After a year of my husband using his, I've ordered a gray one for…

After a year of my husband using his, I've ordered a gray one for myself too!!The handle is comfortable, the button makes opening quick, and the whole thing seems nicely put together for the money. We keep ours in our everyday bags--easy enough to bring along and useful when rain catches us out.I do wish mine had a little pattern instead of being completely plain, but gray is smart and I'm very happy with it.

Leah Cannon

Very good.

My brother seems to attract windy weather whenever he carries an umbrella. This one got through his first big storm after Christmas without any drama, which earns five stars from me. How long it lasts remains to be seen (the wind really does seem to seek him out), but it feels well put together and never looked about to turn inside out. Very good.I also bought a green one for myself, and haven't had enough proper windy, rainy use to judge that one yet. During the short downpour I did take it into, about twenty minutes, it did its job nicely. Wrapping the retaining strap neatly was a little fiddly (I'd prefer a simpler fastening), but I got it wrapped up in the end.

Derrick Brandt

Pretty badass for something to keep rain off.

People have made quite a few nice comments when I carry this around, more than I expected about an umbrella. The oval handle looks different, and the folded umbrella in its sleeve looks a bit like a short baton. Pretty badass for something to keep rain off. It seems solid, too. When someone knocks I sometimes use it to nudge the door handle from my chair rather than getting up.Yes, I could just stand up but I'm lazy and the umbrella is right there. It hasn't minded this treatment. To be fair I've only taken it out in actual rain a handful of times, but it worked fine then.

Sylvia Larson

Fold it up and carry it inside, much easier than a long umbrella.

We bought one for our exercise walks in the Florida heat, and another to leave in the car for those walks across parking lots to shops, etc. Fold it up and carry it inside, much easier than a long umbrella. WOW, the difference when you step out of the direct sun is noticeable. On our first walk people commented and wanted to stand underneath to try the shade, saying "I could use one of these." It isn't weightless, but I'm quite willing to carry it to avoid walking with the sun beating straight down on me. Very worthwhile for us.
